Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is one of the most anticipated phones of 2013, even though we’re still stuck in 2012. It’ll almost certainly be one of the most popular phones of next year. And probably one of the best.

But what will the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S3 offer? Here’s what’s on the cards.

Samsung Galaxy S4 release date

CES 2013 January unveiling, April releaseThe latest rumours suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be unveiled at CES 2013. This is a gigantic technology conference-slash-expo that takes place in Las Vegas during the early days of January 2013. A rumour leaked by infamous Samsung fib-pedlars Sammobile suggests that the phone will be released a few months later in April 2013.
A CES 2013 launch seems unlikely, as Samsung has taken to throwing lavish dedicated events for its flagship phones. The Samsung Galaxy S3, for example, was launched at a huge event that saw the whole of Earl’s Court booked out for the privilege. Samsung is not likely to step back for the next-gen model.

That said, Samsung did launch the Galaxy Note 2 at an event during the IFA press conference – a comparable event.

Samsung Galaxy S4 core specs

Cortex-A15 processor, quad-core CPU, eight-core GPUKorean website Ddaily reckons that the Samsung Galaxy S4 will use a next-generation Exynos-series processor with the codename “Adonis”. It’ll use the ARM Cortex-A15 architecture, which ARM says is a solid 40 percent faster than the previous Cortex-A9 type.

The one common device that uses this chip type at present is the Google Nexus 10, the bigger brother of the Google Nexus 7 tablet. It’s searingly fast tablet, even though its main CPU only has two cores.

As the Samsung Galaxy S3 uses a quad-core chip, it’s unlikely that Samsung would let the Galaxy S4 appear to be slower than its predecessor by using a chipset with fewer cores. Expect bags of power, and an eight-core Mali GPU.

Samsung Galaxy S4 screen

5-inch Full-HD screenSamsung’s phones are renowned for their screens, and the Galaxy S4 is expected to feature something very special. The generally-reliable GSMarena believes the phone will have a 5-inch screen (4.99 inches, technically speaking) with a 1080p-resolution panel.

It’ll still feature Super AMOLED panel tech, though, in-line with the Samsung Galaxy S3 and previous phones in the series. AMOLED screens offer excellent contrast and very vivid colours. However, most OLED screens also use a PenTile sub-pixel array.

Sound confusing? It just means that pixels have to effectively share pub-pixels, which results in lower sharpness. In a lower-resolution screen, it makes text look a bit wonky. However, with a 1080p display it shouldn’t have much of an ill effect.

Samsung Galaxy S4 camera

13MP cameraWe thought the megapixel race was over – but perhaps not. The Samsung Galaxy S4 will have a 13-megapixel camera according to recent rumours. Simply adding more megapixels does not result in better images, but Samsung is one of the best makers of mobile phone cameras. It has been top of its game for years now. Can Samsung really pull off a 13-megapixel snapper, though? If it’s a better performer than the Galaxy S3, we’ll be pretty happy. And we bet it will be.
