A new family of eight Windows 8 PCs previewed by Samsung this week is set to include two new ultrabooks and two other new notebooks, along with two tablet convertibles and a pair of all-in-ones. The four new laptops are the Samsung Series 5 Ultra Touch, the Series 9 Premium Ultrabook, and updated editions of Samsung's Series 7 and Series 3 notebooks.
Of these four, the Series 5 Ultratouch is the only one outfitted with a touchscreen. However, the three other models are all enabled for Windows 8 touchpad gestures, noted Charles Young, a Samsung field marketing rep, speaking with NotebookReview at Samsung's "Framing the Future" press event on Monday night in New York City.
For example, you can scroll the screen from left to right by swiping the touchpad from left to right, Young illustrated.
Like Samsung new ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T tablet convertible, the Series 5 Ultra Touch supports ten-finger touch. The ATIV Smart PC 500T, on the other hand, offers five-finger touch.
Meanwhile, the two new Windows 8 all-in-one models rolled out this week -- the 21-5-inch Series 5 All-in-One and the 23.6- and 27-inch Series 7 All-in-One -- are enabled with ten-finger touch, as well. The Series 7 adds support for "hand gesture control" from Samsung, for remote control across the living room.
All eight Windows 8 PCs from Samsung are scheduled for availability on October 26,Microsoft's launch date for the new operating system (OS). Read on for more details about the four new notebooks.
Series 5 Ultra Touch: Designed with Multimedia in Mind
The 13-inch ten-finger multi touchscreen on the Series 5 will offer a display resolution resolution of 1366x768. The Series 5 will also feature a 500GB hard drive with 24GB ExpressCache -- a Samsung technology for accelerating boot-up and start times --along with 4GB of RAM.
This componentry will be housed in an attractive brushed aluminum casing.
The multimedia-geared ultrabook will weigh 3.83 lbs. Pricing is $809.99 for an Intel Core i3 processor model and $859.99 with an Intel Core i5 processor.
Series 9 Premium Ultrabook: Thin and Light
Although Samsung didn't supply the exact dimensions, the updated Series 9 Ultrabook is being touted as one of the thinnest (and lightest) ever. A 13-inch model will weigh 2.55 lbs., while a 15-inch model will tip the scales at 3.63 lbs.
Outfitted with Samsung's SuperBright Plus Technology (400 nit brightness), the 13- and 15-inch displays will provide resolution of 1600x900. Each model will come with a 128GB SSD.
Pricing will start at $1,299.99 for the 13-inch model and $1,399.99 for the 15-incher.
Series 3 Notebook: Flexibly Priced for Family Budgets
The highly configurable Windows 8-enabled Series 3 notebook will offer some of the same features as the Windows 7 model. Like its predecessor, it will come with Fast Start and PowerPlus Battery technologies. Fast Start is meant to let you close the lid to enter a hybrid sleeping mode and then open the lid to get up and running in less than three seconds. PowerPlus is designed to retain 80 percent of original battery capacity for up to 1,000 charges.
Samsung is offering a choice of these two displays: a 15.6 or a 17.3-inch LED HD screen. You can also choose from these four processors: AMD Dual Core A4-4300M, AMD Quad Core A10-4600M, Intel Core i5-3210M or Intel Core i7-3630QM.
Other options will include HDD capacities ranging from 500GB to 1TB and between 4GB and 8GB of RAM.
Units will weigh from 5.51 to 6.17 lbs. Pricing will range from $449.99 to $899.99.
Series 7 Notebook: Powerful but Slim
Priced at $1,099.99, Samsung's updated Windows 8 Series 7 notebook is billed as one of the slimmest and brightest quad-core PCs on the market.
The refreshed Series 7 notebook will combine an Intel Core i7-3635QM processor with a 15-inch screen featuring SuperBright Technology (300 nit brightness).
Samsung's new quad-core notebook will come with 8GB of RAM and a hard drive up to 1TB in capacity with 8GB ExpressCache Technology. It will weigh in at 3.63 lbs.
