Microsoft Surface the Most Popular Device Running the Latest Version of Windows

While Microsoft remains mum on the volume of Surface sales, it appears the Windows RT tablet is once again the most popular Windows 8 device, despite its market percentage dropping significantly since last month, according to data from AdDuplex.
AdDuplex Windows 8 Marketshare in Dec A third-party ad-servicing company, which is used by numerous Windows 8 applications, AdDuplex recently took a look at 71 active apps, providing a snapshot of users on Dec. 7. While the survey does not show any overall trends in the field, it does provide new insight on the growing number of Windows 8/RT devices available.
Accounting for 11% of the market in November, the Surface Windows RT slate has lost nearly half of its share, with only 6% of app requests coming from such equipment. Despite this drop, the Microsoft tablet is still the most popular Windows 8 device, with HP's 2000 series laptop, which typically sells for under $400, coming in second with 3% of usage.
With more companies introducing new hardware to the market, such as Asus with the Windows RT Vivo Tab and HP with a trio of budget-friendly Windows 8 devices, Microsoft's Surface is seeing some competition. When broken down by manufacturers, HP currently leads the pack, supplying 22% of Windows 8 devices, followed by Dell, Acer, Asus and Toshiba. Rounding out the group is Microsoft in the sixth spot, down from its second-place ranking a month ago.
With Microsoft set to release the Surface for Windows 8 Pro in January and more hardware from other vendors pegged to hit the market next year, usage of the more than 5,500 different Windows 8/RT devices in this current survey by AdDuplex will likely increase. Though it will be interesting to see if Microsoft can hold on to its small lead for the most popular device.
