Google X Phone being designed by Motorola

Motorola is working on an official Google X Phone, according to the latest reports.

Motorola X Phone

The Wall Street Journal claims that the Google-owned mobile phone manufacturer is "hard at work on a sophisticated handset," which has been dubbed internally as the "X phone." It will be launched in 2013.

According to the report - which claims to have been drawn from "people familiar with the matter" - Motorola is designing the X Phone with cutting edge features to make it stand apart from rivals such as the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3.

These ambitious plans have hit a few snags along the way, though. In fact, issues with manufacturing and supply chain management have led to a rethink of some of the Google X Phone's brave design decisions.

For example, the report claims that the Google X Phone was intended to have a flexible screen, but this may now be jettisoned. Similarly, it's said that Motorola was looking into using ceramics in order to make the device more stress resistant and more open to colour, but problems with the process have been encountered.

One other interesting aspect of the Google X Phone is that it could make use of Google's acquisition of Viewdle for some kind of image and gesture recognition innovation.

Following the Google X Phone, the report claims that Motorola will turn its attentions to the Google X Tablet

Google's plans for the X Phone are said to reflect its intentions for Motorola in general. It intends to boost its market share by making fewer yet higher quality handsets, but it will be interesting to see how these devices will sit alongside the current Nexus range.
