Gaming fans that were holding their breath for the release of GameStop's Wikipad, a dedicated gaming tablet with analog sticks and gamepad controls, were likely disappointed yesterday when they found that the device, which was supposed to be on shelves, was not.
The original release date for the Tegra 3-packing Wikipad was yesterday, October 31, but it mysteriously never showed up. GameStop was supposed to have the Android-based tablet available, but outlets began telling customers that none were in stock, none were on the way, and that it was no longer available for pre-order. It wasn't until the evening that representatives from Wikipad sent out a statement to the press saying that the gaming tablet had been delayed at the last minute.
"The Wikipad team has been relentlessly working with our manufacturers and partners to perfect the Wikipad bundle to ensure our first product is the best tablet and entertainment experience at launch," the company said in the statement. "There is a last minute opportunity to enhance the Wikipad bundle as well as a minor refinement needed to ensure our first customers are completely satisfied with the Wikipad."
While the statement went on to promise those that pre-ordered the device that they would be receiving both the "refined and upgraded bundles as well as a special bonus gift with the pre-order," no new release date was given. The company simply said that the Wikipad is in the final stages of development and that it would be announcing the new date "soon."
Wikipad Specs
The Wikipad will be made up of two parts, a tablet and an attachable gamepad controller with dual joysticks, a D-pad, and other buttons and controllers.
The tablet portion will have a 10.1-inch IPS touchscreen with 1280 by 800 resolution. There are going to be an 8 megapixel rear camera with flash and a 2MP on the front.
Wikipad is being built around a 1.4GHz nVidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor, with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a microSD meory card slot. It was originally slated to launch with Android 4.0, but GameStop now says it will debut running Android 4.1.
The GameStop Wikipad is going to sell for $500.
